King of the Valley
by:Ben Johnson
I rate a restaurant by aroma
its food by taste and texture, not by looks.
With fingers I read the works of Homer
they walk me through the passages of books.
I shake hands and I know the kind of man,
palms rough from the farm or smooth from the phone
I hear things no average person can
the sound of a grin or unuttered groan.
I tell the type of dawn by song of bird
as they sing of sun or threatening rains
and I know what men hear, yet have not heard,
markers in life, like telling time by trains.
All is not dark in my eternal night,
for there's more to seeing than having sight.
